Yellowknife, NT (November 25, 2024) – The Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC) announces that the average employer assessment rate is remaining at $2.40 per $100 of assessable payroll, unchanged since 2020.
This is the rate the WSCC would need to charge if all employers paid the same amount and is used as the starting point when setting individual subclass rates.
Subclasses are groups of employers who have similar operations and share similar risks. Each employer pays an annual assessment based on the group rate for their industry and the size of their payroll.
9 subclasses of employers in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut will see rate decreases and 7 will see increases in 2025.
Examples of industries with rate increases for next year include Mine Operations, Mobile Equipment Operations, Logging and Marine Construction.
Examples of subclass groups with a decrease in rates include Outdoor Recreation and Tourism, General Construction and Trucking.
“The largest factor in determining what employers are responsible for paying to the Workers Protection Fund is the cost of workplace injuries for their industry group,” said Rick Hunt, WSCC President and CEO. “As the stewards of this fund, the WSCC needs to ensure coverage for workers now and into future, while maintaining stable assessment rates for employers”.
These rates come into effect January 1, 2025.
