Media Release: April 28th National Day of Mourning

27th Apr 2021

Yellowknife, NT (April 27, 2021) – The National Day of Mourning, marked annually on April 28, is dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives, or suffered injury or illness at work.

“Today, we remember the workers who have lost their lives and the families, friends, co-workers and communities that mourn them. Let us honour their memory by working together to raise awareness of the importance of workplace safety and renewing our commitment to create safer workplaces. One life lost is too many”, said Hon. Shane Thompson, Minister Responsible for the Workers’ Safety & Compensation Commission (WSCC) in the Northwest Territories.

“For the Northern Territories Federation of Labour and the workers we represent, April 28th, the Day of Mourning is a very personal moment we mourn together. Today, we grieve together. We also need to make a commitment to each other - a commitment to workplace safety and accountability.  Not just today but every day,” said Nicole Tews, Northern Territories Federation of Labour (NTFL).”

Please join us wherever you are by holding a minute of silence on April 28th.  Recognize the National Day of Mourning in your workplace or share your support on social media using the hashtag #DayOfMourning.

Remember that awareness of workplace safety can save lives.
